Some weddings are big. Others are unforgettable for completely different reasons.

This Melbourne wedding with Emilie + Matt wasn't about grand gestures or sticking to tradition. It was about celebrating what mattered most, surrounded by the people who could be there, in one of Melbourne's best neighbourhoods.

Set across their apartment, St Mark's Church, and Babines in Fitzroy, their day was moody, intimate and deeply personal. The kind of Fitzroy wedding that reminds you weddings don't need to be big to have a huge impact.

A wedding that became even more meaningful

When Emilie and Matt first started planning their wedding, it looked very different.

Family living in Europe had planned to travel to Melbourne, but suddenly it wasn’t possible. Like a lot of couples, they found themselves rethinking everything.

Instead of trying to recreate the wedding they'd imagined, they embraced something smaller. More intimate. More intentional. Looking back, it felt like exactly the right decision.

I'd been chatting with them throughout the replanning process, helping them navigate the changes and make the day feel exciting again. Watching it all come together made it even more special.

An emotional morning in Fitzroy

The morning was filled with quiet moments rather than chaos.

Matt spent the morning getting ready with his mates before sharing emotional first looks with both his mum and dad separately. Then came one of the most memorable moments of the day.

Before leaving for the ceremony, he watched a video Emilie had made for him, sharing personal vows she'd recorded in advance. It was raw, emotional and completely private. You could feel just how much the day meant before it had even begun.

Meanwhile, Emilie spent the morning getting ready with her closest friends, soaking in every moment before walking down the aisle.

A beautiful ceremony at St Mark's, Fitzroy

Their ceremony took place at St Mark's Church in Fitzroy, a beautiful space that suited the mood of the day perfectly.

The winter light spilling through the church, the quiet atmosphere and the genuine emotion in the room made every moment feel even more powerful.

There wasn't anything over-produced about it. Just two people completely present with each other, surrounded by the people they love most.

Those are always my favourite ceremonies to photograph.

Portraits inside St Mark's

Before we stepped outside, we took a few quiet moments inside St Mark's while the church was empty.

The moody light, soaring ceilings and rich textures gave us the perfect backdrop for portraits that felt cinematic without trying too hard. Winter light filtered through the windows, creating deep shadows and pockets of soft light that added so much atmosphere.

These weren't overly posed portraits. Just a little gentle direction, a beautiful space, and two people soaking up the first few moments of being married. Some of my favourite images from the entire day came from those few quiet minutes inside the church.

private Cocktails before the reception

Instead of rushing straight to portraits, Emilie and Matt did something that felt incredibly them.

We wandered over to Hands Down, their favourite cocktail bar in Fitzroy, for a quiet drink together before heading to the reception.

A martini in hand, a chance to breathe, and a few minutes to soak in the fact that they were finally married.

Those little pauses often become some of the most meaningful parts of the day.

From there, we explored Fitzroy together, taking portraits through laneways, side streets and wherever the neighbourhood gave us interesting light and texture. Nothing overly posed, just gentle direction and plenty of space for them to be themselves.

An intimate reception at Babines

The celebrations continued at Babines, a restaurant owned by a friend of the couple.

Great food, incredible wine and one long table full of the people who mattered most.

It felt less like a formal reception and more like one of those unforgettable dinners where nobody wanted the night to end.

One of my favourite details was hidden in plain sight.

Instead of standard place settings, Emilie and Matt printed personal messages to each other on their dinner napkins. It was such a simple idea, but one that perfectly reflected the thought and intention they'd put into every part of the day.

The styling followed the same philosophy, with a moody palette of blacks, whites and rich reds that complemented the winter atmosphere beautifully.

Proof that smaller weddings can feel even bigger

What I'll remember most about Emilie and Matt's wedding isn't a single photo or a particular location.

It's how intentional everything felt.

Every decision reflected who they are as a couple. Nothing was there because tradition said it should be. Every part of the day had meaning, from sharing a martini in their favourite bar to celebrating with the people who mattered most.

It's a reminder that your wedding doesn't have to follow anyone else's rules.

It just has to feel like you.
