A Meaningful Melbourne Wedding Blending Vietnamese Tradition & Modern Celebration
Every Melbourne wedding has its own story, but Linh + Shayne's was one I'll remember for a long time. It was a day built around family, tradition, and the people who mattered most, while still feeling completely modern and true to them.
From a heartfelt Vietnamese tea ceremony to a moody celebration at Half Acre in South Melbourne, every part of the day had meaning behind it.
A morning tea Ceremony centred around family
Linh and Shayne's story started the way a lot of modern love stories do… on an app. But what stood out most wasn't where they met, it was what they built together afterwards.
They're homebodies at heart who love cooking and baking together, but more than anything, family sits at the centre of their lives. You could feel that from the very first moments of the day.
The morning began at Linh's parents' home in Glen Waverley with a traditional Vietnamese tea ceremony. Rich reds filled the house as family and close friends gathered to celebrate, while the groom's family arrived carrying ceremonial trays before the symbolic handover between both families began. From bowing at the family altar and lighting incense to sharing food together afterwards, every tradition carried so much meaning.

I only photographed Shayne getting ready that morning, which was a decision Linh made because she knew those moments with his mum would be something he'd treasure. Those quiet interactions before the day really kicked off became some of my favourite images.
A moody Half Acre wedding
After freshing, everyone made their way to Half Acre in South Melbourne for the wedding ceremony and reception.
If you've never been to a Half Acre wedding, the venue has this incredible atmosphere. The moody interiors, soft lighting and industrial character create such a unique backdrop without needing to over-style anything.
The ceremony itself was emotional, heartfelt and full of genuine reactions. No over-the-top production—just two people making promises to each other surrounded by everyone they love.
Portraits with a little Melbourne weather
Autumn turned it on for most of the day with cool, overcast skies before the rain arrived just in time for portraits.
Honestly? I wasn't mad about it.
The rain added another layer of mood to the images, and Half Acre's beautiful indoor spaces meant we could embrace the weather rather than fight against it. The result was a gallery full of natural moments, dramatic light and portraits that felt like them.
A celebration that stayed true to them
The reception carried the same relaxed energy as the rest of the day. The styling shifted from the bold reds of the tea ceremony to soft greens, sage tones, whites and touches of black, creating a beautiful contrast between the cultural traditions and the modern celebration.
One of my favourite moments came during the parent dances. At one point I was able to frame all four of them together in a single image from different perspectives - a small moment that says so much about two families becoming one.
And because no wedding should take itself too seriously, Linh and Shayne swapped the traditional bouquet toss for a Labubu toss instead. Safe to say it got plenty of laughs.
A wedding that felt completely personal
What I loved most about this Melbourne wedding wasn't one big moment—it was how intentional the entire day felt.
Nothing happened because tradition said it had to. Every decision reflected who Linh and Shayne are, from honouring their families with a meaningful tea ceremony to celebrating with the people they love at their Half Acre wedding.
Those are always the weddings that stay with me.
